Je déteste toutes ces paperasseries!

I hate all this paperwork!
I can’t imagine that you’ll disagree with me on this! Do you know anyone who loves paperwork?
In the right context, you can call it red tape. I don’t actually where that term came from, but it does sound foreboding. Kind of like yellow crime-scene tape, something you want to stay away from because bad things happen there.
The root word of paperasseries is le papier, which is just plain ordinary paper. But the -asse suffix adds a pejorative meaning to a word, in general. There is a word paperasse(s), which also means paperwork, but the more syllables you add, the worse it sounds: hence, paperasseries.
So the next time you are taking out a mortgage, filing a tax return, adopting a child, or doing practically anything else official, remember to spit out these words. Bite them off, make them sound venomous. Feel free to shout. You’ll feel so much better, and I doubt if anyone will mind. They probably share your opinion.
