The secret seamstresses of the Democratic Party…
Literally, the little hands of the Democratic Party. And who on earth could they be?
In the world of la haute couture, the seamstresses are known as les petites mains. They work behind the scenes, anonymously and without praise, but without their efforts, there would be no dresses, no runway walks, no trunk shows. They are given the pattern, and they work their magic.
Political parties aren’t staffed by seamstresses, even though there must be people who stitch on lost buttons and repair torn hems for presidential candidates. But I am sure the parties are full of people who work anonymously, leaking good news, tweeting spins on bad news, hinting at items that might damage the opposing campaign. Their job is to stitch up an image.
They would be les petites mains, the little hands who reacted with glee last week when Vanity Fair magazine published an article about Mitt Romney’s low taxes and offshore accounts. Bad coverage for Romney’s campaign, good news for Obama’s, and so Obama’s campaign published a link to the article to call the world’s attention to it.
Here’s a link to the story in Le Monde. Our expression is in the first paragraph. The rest of the article is interesting, too.
