It’s a dialogue of the deaf.

And what exactly is un dialogue de sourds?

We’ve all participated in such a conversation, or witnessed one. It’s one of those conversations where both (or all) parties are talking past each other, and no one is listening to anyone else. It’s not really a dialogue or an exchange, because each person is essentially talking to himself or herself.

Stand-up comedians and playwrights often make use of misunderstandings of the “I think he’s going by train-Of course it’s going to rain” variety, to great effect. But in the real-life world of the hearing-impaired, such occurrences may be frustrating and even heartbreaking.
