Il m’a écrit un chèque en bois!

eel mah ay-kree uh sheck-ah BWAH. Click below to hear this.

He wrote me a rubber check!

In English, a bad check bounces. Of course, since it’s rubber! But in French, bad checks are manufactured from different materials: they are. wooden! So they don’t bounce, they are simply refused (refusé).

So really, our phrase for today says He wrote me a wooden check. If you want to say His check bounced, say Son chèque a été refusé. You’ll want to steer clear of these. If someone drops un chèque en bois on you, it will hurt your wallet and your toes!
