I don’t want to pay the damages.

This is a good line to remember when someone is setting up an iffy plan, a plan where something is likely to go wrong. You’re not necessarily refusing to participate, but you might be hinting that you have a better idea. An idea where the blame would be shifted away from you would be a good start. Something like arranging to steal the cookies but get your little brother caught with his hand in the jar, for example.

Literally, the French says I don’t want to pay for the broken pots. It refers to the glasses that get broken in a bar fight. Naturally, the person who started the fight would be considered responsible for the costs.
