Elle est tombée dans les pommes.

Elle est tombée dans les pommes.

ell lay taw-BAY dah lay PUM. Click below to hear this pronounced!

She fainted.

So many words in French for so few in English! That’s because they don’t really say the same thing at all. Literally, the French says: She fell into the apples. I’ll bet that’s not what you were expecting!

I’ve never noticed that apples themselves make people feel faint, so we’ll just have to blame the people who left the apples lying around. Mom loses it with the kid in the ER: Elle est tombée dans les pommes. Husband goes weak-kneed in the delivery room when his wife is giving birth? Il est tombé dans les pommes.

So pick up your stuff, people! Eat the apples. They’ll keep you healthy, so maybe you won’t tomber dans les pommes (there won’t be any to fall into…).
