Aujourd’hui, la petite finale de la Coupe du Monde 2010.

Today, the play-off for the 2010 World Cup.

Do you follow le foot? That’s short for le football (luh foot-BAHL), which really means soccer to most of the world. And the world is following the World Cup closely!

La petite finale, the “little final”, will determine which of Uruguay and Germany will carry off the silver and which the bronze. In the meantime, l’Espagne (Spain) and les Pays-Bas (the Netherlands, the “low countries”) will play la finale on Sunday.

Since France has been eliminated, French-speakers must decide where to place their allegiance now. Some French-speaking Belgians, where language is a very hot political potato (French speakers vs. Dutch speakers), are for once cheering for les Pay-Bas: that’s as close as Belgium has been able to get to the Coupe du Monde this year.

  1. “Le football, “which really means soccer to most of the world”.”

No. Le football means “football” to most of the world. It means “soccer” to Americans. Are you trying to start World War Three?
